DARS Report Helps Students Chart Their Academic Progress

DARS (Degree Audit Reporting System) is an automated system managed by the University of Tennessee registrar that compares students' completed coursework with their degree requirements and produces a report that shows their progress toward a degree program. A DARS report is a great planning tool because it also shows the classes that need to be taken to finish the degree. Summer is a good time for parents and students to reference this report to see progression requirements for degree programs. The DARS reports are currently only available for undergraduate students. Students may access DARS reports by clicking here. A helpful guide for parents that explains the different parts of a DARS report is available here.

Life of the Mind Offers Exciting Discussion for First-Year Students

The University of Tennessee offers first-year students an exciting program called Life of the Mind. All incoming students are required to read the same book over the summer and participate in a group discussion during Welcome Week. This year's book is Ishmael Beah's A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier.

The goal of this program is to create a shared intellectual context for incoming students, to stimulate discussion and interaction, and to cultivate the skills of critical thinking, reading, and engagement with ideas that students will employ throughout their academic life and beyond. Incoming first-year students will be contacted via their UT email account this summer with information about registering for their discussion groups. After reading the book, students should write a one-page response paper and bring two copies of the paper to their discussion group's meeting. More information about the writing assignment is available here.

Parent oUTreach Helps Parents Stay Connected

The Parents Association is now offering a new initiative to connect Parents Association members to other members in their area who have students at the University of Tennessee. The new service, called Parent oUTreach, will be offered to parents beginning this summer. As we work to start this service, please log into your online account and set whether or not you would like your information included in this database.

To login to your membership record, click here. Log in to your membership account using your email address and password. The password is your membership ID number, unless you have changed it. If you do not know your membership ID number, please call our office at (865) 974-4546. Beginning this summer, parents will be asked on their membership application if they would like to be included in the Parent Outreach directory for their area.

Going on Vacation This Summer? Take Smokey!

As part of UT's Ready for the World initiative, you can take Smokey with you on vacation! You could be featured on UT's Ready for the World website if you take a picture or video of yourself in an interesting location, wearing the "Where in the World is Smokey" t-shirt (which is provided to you free of charge). For more information and to apply for the program, click here.

Ready for the World is part of a long-range plan to transform the campus into a culture of diversity that best prepares students for working and competing in the 21st century. Ready for the World offers exciting events and speakers to help educate students about global issues and cultures. For more information, click here.

Honor Someone With a Donation to the UT Library

UT Libraries' "Honor with Books" program allows you to honor someone with a donation to the library. With a $50 contribution, the librarians select a book in the subject area you designate, and a bookplate honoring the person of your choice will be entered into the libraries' catalog. Honor with Books allows you to make two gifts. With each reading, the book you have helped us purchase presents a gift of knowledge to UT students. Each time the book is selected in the catalog, the bookplate acknowledges your generosity and your tribute to the honoree.

Honor with Books provides a lasting remembrance of the important milestones in our lives: graduations, retirements, promotions, anniversaries, birthdays and weddings. When you make your gift to the UT Libraries' Honor with Books program, a letter of acknowledgement will be sent to you and your honoree (or his or her family). In addition, your name will be listed in the Libraries' annual publication, the Library Development Review. For more information, click here.
